Punch- November 13

The Acting Director, Defense Information, Col. Rabe Abubakar, has said the German Government has offered to supply counter-Improvised Explosive Devices equipment to the country.

He said the Germans would also render other supports which included medical treatment for the injured, establishment of a peacekeeping centre, capacity building and training for medical personnel, military mechanical units amongst others.

Abubakar quoted the leader of a German Advisory Team in charge of military equipment and programme aid, Col. Thomas Brillisauer, as having made the promise, in a statement on Wednesday.

He said Brillisauer made the comment during a courtesy visit to the Defense Headquarters, Abuja on Wednesday.

Brillisauer was also quoted as saying that the German’s support was meant to improve the relationship between the two countries.

German military personnel are the sole trainers at the Armed Forces Electronics and Mechatronics Engineering Workshop and School.

He said the Germans visited the Defense Headquarters to discuss possible areas of collaboration with the Nigerian military in the fight against the insurgency in the North-East.

Speaking also, the Chief of Policy and Plans of the Defense Headquarters, AVM Umar Omaiza, who represented the Chief of Defense Staff, Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin, commended the Germans for the offer of support.

He said the long standing relationship between Germany and Nigeria resulted in the establishment of the Armed Forces Electrical Mechatronics Engineering Workshop and School.
